This path is for insurance questions. You can explore your needs, learn about available policy features, and ask for the materials you need to make an informed decision.
Understanding indexed universal life
Indexed universal life insurance (IUL) is permanent life insurance that combines a death benefit with a cash-value component. Interest crediting may be linked to an index using the policy’s stated rules. The policy does not invest directly in that index.
Policies have charges, limitations, and funding requirements. Caps, participation rates, and other terms affect interest credits. A floor on index-linked interest does not prevent policy charges from reducing the cash value.
Loans and withdrawals can affect cash value, death benefits, and the policy’s ability to stay in force. Tax treatment depends on policy structure and use; discuss your circumstances with a qualified tax professional.
Questions worth asking
- What need should the policy address?Consider dependents, income needs, responsibilities, and a sustainable premium budget.
- What is guaranteed, and what can change?Ask for both guaranteed and non-guaranteed values and a clear explanation of any illustration.
- What does the policy cost over time?Review charges, surrender periods, funding assumptions, and what happens if performance or premiums differ from expectations.
- What alternatives should I understand?Ask how different types of life insurance could meet the need you have identified.
